RSoFM

Hello and welcome to the new RSoFM page, here you’ll be able to find out all about the STEM outreach projects that the HI-SEAS III Crew has been carrying out with help from elementary and middle school students in the Clark County School Dictrict in Nevada.

RSoFM

Why “Real Science on Fake Mars”?  The name is a bit of a joke with this crew, we’re fake astronauts living in a dome on fake Mars (simulated Mars, or sMars for short) for a very real eight months.  Thats right, 242 days.  We entered this dome on October 15th, 2014 and we will be leaving on June 13th, 2015.  During that time we have had a real band on fake Mars (our guitar-playing Medical Officer and ukulele-learning Commander), a Real Food on Fake Mars cooking show starring Jocelyn, and some real dance parties on fake mars.  We all want to be able to give back to the STEM community that nutured and encouraged us through our formative years and so to help out those still finding their path to Mars, we’ve developed Real Science on Fake Mars.

Vanderberg, Sandy Miller, and Lamping Elementary Schools and Hyde Park Middle School are participating with us in six projects designed to test their creativity and help us contibute to the fidelity of future HI-SEAS missions.  Check out their youtube links below as our crew explains each project we offer to our RSoFM Mission Support:

We’ve also received some questions from Sandy Miller kids hoping for some insight into space travel as we know it today: https://youtu.be/aqLkO5PG-A4

We’ve made a “grey water” filtration system to reuse dishwater for the garden and answered some questions from a very creative 3rd grade class: https://youtu.be/0WzRqcrRYqk   SMES 3rd Grade Water Treatment Questions

We’ve also made some great strides towards completing the robot to help future HI-SEAS AstroNots map local lava tubes:

  1. Hi Sophie,
I have been following your domesoph blog and have managed to read it entirely. From your last post I found out that you will be attending the IAC this year to present a paper. Coincidentally I am also presenting at the IAC 2016. It would be a great pleasure to meet you there and bounce off a few ideas and questions. Hope this works for you?

    Regards,
    Rakshith Ramesh
